Ive first installed a base sheet of 5/8" particle board. This is typical for countertop construction, because it gives the top some rigidity, and also brings it a little higher for clearance of the doors below. Ive secured the particle board layer directly to the base cabinets from the top.
Next, Ive cut the countertop piece in my shop to fit over the base sheet. Note: ALL cuts made on the finished cherry are taped off first to prevent splintering by the saw blades. I use the blue painters tape. Ive spent a ton of time on this job just taping things off!
Ive taken the top to the jobsite, and have installed it on top of the particle board base layer, screwing it from below. This will hide any and all fasteners. When ready, I will be making a cherry bullnose to boarder the edges. The owner will be getting a glass top to install over this countertop to protect it.
