During a recent apartment renovation, I decided to take some pics of how I cut a hole in a counter top for a sink.
After cutting the counter top for length, Ive set it in place and marked the center line of the sink base cabinet on a piece of tape on the front nose of the counter.  Here is a pic of the counter sitting on the work table upside down:
Next, I set the sink in place (upside down), find the center of the sink, and line it up with the center line of the base cabinet (marked on the tape).
Next, I trace around the entire sink, and set the sink aside.  I make another line, roughly 1/4" inside of the sinks perimeter line.  This is my cut line.
I cut the counter with the bottom facing up, because of the direction of spin on the circular saw and on the jig saw.  Because of the spin direction (and using sharp blades), there is no need to tape the top surface of the counter.  I use the circular saw for the straight sides, and the jig saw to cut the corners.
Also, before installing the top, I install my end caps and finish them off.  Its easier to do while the top is not set in place...
